Plans for a Hindu crematorium, which can accommodate funerals attended by up to 500 people, have been refused by Buckinghamshire Council.

The crematorium, planned for an area within the existing grounds of the Anoopam Mission, Swaminarayan Temple, in Denham, was refused on the grounds of being in the Green Belt.

Councillors on the south area planning committee ruled on Tuesday, September 1, that it did not qualify as ‘very special circumstances’.

It was to have included two waiting rooms, two private ritual rooms, a large ceremony hall, a crematory hall with furnaces and plant, a canteen for 100 diners and showers.

Councillors debated the application for almost two hours before voting by nine in favour of refusal with one abstention.
