Mixbrow Construction has been awarded the contract to deliver modernisation works to Grade II-listed Ipswich Regent Theatre.
The 1929-built theatre, East Anglia’s largest, will close on Sunday May 4 for more than six months while shows are transferred to the Corn Exchange.
There will be a grand reopening for the theatre’s Christmas pantomime Cinderella from December 12.
The project is solely funded by a Restoration Levy of £1.70 which has been added to all tickets costing more than £10 since June 2023. The income ring-fenced generated was ring-fenced for the refurbishment, improvement and upkeep of the theatre.
During its 1960s heyday, stars including Little Richard, Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, Cliff Richard and The Beatles, performed there.
Cllr Jane Riley, Ipswich Borough Council’s portfolio holder for culture and customers, said: “We’re pleased to see Mixbrow Construction appointed as our contractor to carry out the redevelopment project Ipswich Regent Theatre.
“These improvements will make a big difference to our audiences, and we can’t wait for them to see the theatre’s transformation in December as we welcome back audiences to enjoy our festive panto, Cinderella.”
Michael Manning, contracts manager for Mixbrow Construction said: “On behalf of Mixbrow construction, we are extremely pleased to be awarded this prestigious project, we look forward to working with the project team on this much-loved entertainment facility for the region.”
