Reading Borough Council’s Policy Committee have agreed two recommendations, one of which will be followed up on based on whether the Council’s bid for funding to renovate the Hexagon Theatre is successful.
The bid was made to Art Council England’s (ACE) Creative Foundations Fund, for £2,068,000. The improvements provided by the bid would focus on seating, drainage, fire stopping and fire door remedial works.
The Hexagon has seen funding approval for extensions and renovations in the recent past , so approval of the bid could be of great use to the facility.
First recommendation
If the bid is successful, the Committee will recommend granting spending approval and will delegate their authority on the renovation to the executive director of economic growth and neighbourhood services, in consultation with the director of legal & governance, and the director of finance. Those parties will then enter into all necessary contracts to achieve the outputs of the bid.
Second recommendation
If the bid is not successful, the Committee will recommend spend approval for £564,000, only for the replacement of the arena and stall seating, as the reduced budget would only allow for renovations in these areas.
The second recommendation uses the same delegations of authority as the first, however in this eventuality the contracts entered would be exclusively focused on achieving these seating replacements.
