The London Borough of Richmond upon Thames (LBRUT) planning committee have unanimously approved a detailed proposal to redevelop part of the Barnes Hospital Site on Worple Way, into a new school and health clinic.
Officers noted that whilst there were many objections relating to traffic there were none objecting to a school and health clinic. However, it was pointed out that the cumulative effect of traffic in the first detailed application must taken into account when the second part for accommodation comes forward.
The London River Academy will be a 90-place special educational needs school for children aged between 7 and 19 years old (primary, secondary and post 16) with complex social, emotional, mental health (SEMH) issues.Beckmead Trust have been selected to operate the school. The school will meet the urgent need in the borough for specialist education.
The school is planned to open in September 2024.
The health centre will specialise in mental health.Inpatient mental health services has not been provided at Barnes Hospital since 2013.
This site has been significantly underused for years and as part of the Trust’s Integrated Programme, this site has been identified as the ideal location to provide a state-of-the-art facility for mental health. The Trust’s Integrated Programme will inject multimillion pound investment into the mental health service for the Trust, which will benefit over one million people in the boroughs of Richmond, Wandsworth, Kingston, Merton and Sutton.
