Places for London is proposing to upgrade the railway arches at Ranelagh Gardens, Putney Bridge, as part of a wider £8m investment in arches across the capital in 2026/27.

The scheme focuses on arches 72–76 and the associated rear yard and service yard, which are currently vacant. The aim is to transform the site into a more attractive, secure and flexible place for community-focused businesses.

The plans include new frontages and rear facades to the arches, demolition of rear extensions at arches 75 and 76, new fencing to the yard facing the Thames Path, and improved lighting and wayfinding. The use of the yard would change from car rental (Sui Generis) to flexible Class E use, while arches 72 and 73 would also be brought into Class E use for commercial, business and service activities. The proposal also retains the possibility of future mezzanine floors, subject to tenant needs, through the provision of a suitable ground floor slab.

The site sits beneath the District line near the Thames Path, with strong views over the River Thames and connections to Putney Bridge. Place for London says the location offers a rare opportunity to unlock part of its estate and create a “Place for Community.” The design is intended to improve natural surveillance, safety and access, support healthy and active frontages, and reduce anti-social behaviour through better lighting, enhanced security, and the activation of the public realm. The plans have been submitted to Hammersmith & Fulham Council under application 2026/00249/FUL.
