McCarthy Stone has submitted proposals to build a retirement village of 47 flats in Old Basing.

The developer plans a mix of one and two-bedroom apartments at the site of the Eden Basingstoke dealership in London Road.

The development will include communal spaces including a residents’ lounge and gardens, areas for growing plants, socialising and interacting with nature and car parking.

The proposals involve removal of the existing access point on London Road which will be replaced with a new access point in Byfleet Avenue and there will be new pedestrian access.

Public consultation ahead of the submission included:

  • An overall reduction in the number of homes proposed from 51 to 47 apartments, reducing the size of the building
  • Moving the building further away from neighbours
  • Revisions to the landscaping
  • Replacing render with different colour brickwork
  • Changing parking from 36 spaces for 51 apartments to 35 spaces for 47 apartments

Simon Broomfield, divisional development director for McCarthy Stone Southern, said: “We would like to thank all the local residents that took part in our consultation prior to submitting our application. We have made a number of amendments to the proposals that seek to address the feedback received during our pre-application consultation period to better reflect the local area.

“We are excited to submit our plans for Old Basing, which could provide a valuable opportunity to improve the health and wellbeing of local older people through specialist housing that meets their needs, whilst also supporting significant cost savings to the NHS and local social care services.”

He added: “Our proposals for Old Basing would help to address a demand for retirement accommodation in the area, providing housing choice for older people, whilst freeing up the wider housing market for local families and first-time buyers further down the chain, and reducing pressure to deliver homes on greenfield sites.”
