The Tooting Broadway and Amen Corner areas are undergoing significant improvements as part of the council’s Decade of Renewal programme.

This initiative aims to enhance the public realm, making streets and public spaces cleaner, greener, and safer for residents, workers, and visitors. Key upgrades include pavement repairs on Mitcham Road, improved drainage to reduce flooding, and the installation of new and refurbished tree pits with low-level planting. Additionally, Tooting Broadway and Amen Corner will benefit from jet washing, decluttering, and upgraded street lighting with heritage-style lanterns to improve safety and visibility.

The project also focuses on celebrating local history with ghost signs and collaborating with shop owners to enhance shop fronts. Increased bin and cycle parking, along with additional planting around Tooting Broadway, are also part of the improvements. Amen Corner will undergo new paving, kerb realignment, and drainage upgrades, with guardrails replaced by cycle parking facilities. The area will be refreshed with jet washing, and options for uplighting key buildings are being explored to create a more inviting night-time environment.

These efforts are informed by community feedback, aiming to support a vibrant and accessible town centre. Jenny Yates, cabinet member for transport, emphasises the importance of these improvements in making Tooting a better place to live, work, and visit. The council is also planning more substantial works for 2026/27, including public realm upgrades at Church Lane and Bickersteth Road, new pedestrian crossings, traffic signals, and cycle lane improvements.

This investment is supported by the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund and contributions from developers through the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL). An additional £1.35m was unlocked in March to accelerate local improvements across Wandsworth. For updates, follow the council’s social media, e-newsletter, and WhatsApp channel.
