Savills is to auction Grade II-listed County Hall in Ipswich with a guide price of £895,000.

The vacant property, on a corner plot in St Helen’s Street, just a third of a mile from the University of Suffolk, has full planning permission for conversion into 40 apartments.

The historic building (near the bottom in the above image), which dates back to 1836, was initially used as a jail and later served as a law court and council offices.

It has been the head offices of East Suffolk County Council and Suffolk County Council.

The site is being brought to market by Savills Auctions on May 13 on behalf of a private client who, in partnership with Thurlow Architects, secured the planning consent for the conversion last July.

Sam Steinberg of Savills auctions said: “Ipswich County Hall is a striking and historically significant building that offers a rare opportunity to breathe new life into one of Ipswich’s most iconic landmarks.

“With planning permission already secured for residential conversion, the groundwork has been laid for the building’s future while offering an attractive proposition for developers and investors looking to take on a distinctive and rewarding project.”
