Plans for significant redevelopment in Stonebridge, including new homes, jobs, green spaces, and a modern leisure centre, are moving forward after the Secretary of State’s decision.
Historic England advised against listing the old Bridge Park Community Leisure Centre as a building of special interest, and Lisa Nandy MP, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, agreed, removing a potential obstacle to the £600 million investment.
Brent Council supports this decision, as the old centre, a converted bus garage, no longer meets modern standards and would require substantial investment to maintain.
Councillor Muhammed Butt, leader of Brent Council, emphasised the importance of Bridge Park in Stonebridge’s history, noting that it was built by locals who sought opportunity and pride for their community. He stated, “This decision allows us to turn that belief into delivery. We can now get on with building a new leisure centre fit for the next generation and delivering hundreds of genuinely affordable homes.” The new leisure centre will be more than twice the size of the current one, featuring a swimming pool, a larger gym, a sports hall, fitness studios, community spaces, adult education facilities, and a café.
Brent Council is collaborating with Stonebridge Real Estate Development Limited (SRED) to redevelop the site, which includes the Unisys buildings. The project will introduce new parks, over 300 trees, play areas, community gardens, and green roofs. Additionally, over 1,000 new homes, a hotel, a restaurant, and retail spaces will be developed, creating numerous local jobs during and after construction. Long-vacant sites, like the Unisys buildings, will be revitalised.
Councillor Teo Benea, cabinet member for Regeneration, Planning and Property, highlighted the project’s significance, noting that it will support new homes, create jobs, and boost Stonebridge’s economic potential. He remarked: “Our residents deserve the very best that money can buy, and that is the standard we are setting here.” The regeneration aims to set a new benchmark for public facilities in Brent, enhancing the quality of life for current and future residents.
Brent Council is committed to collaborating with residents and community groups to ensure the project’s success. They are focused on avoiding further delays and delivering tangible benefits to the local community. For more information, updates on the Bridge Park regeneration programme are available.
