The site of a former car showroom which has planning permission in place for 55 new homes is now up for sale.

The land at 72-78 Military Road, Colchester, which was previously used as the Lookers Renault garage and workshop, is on the market with Savills.

Colchester Brough Council granted planning permission for two residential apartment blocks on the 1.2-acre site at the end of last year.

Block one would comprise 45 one- and two-bedroom apartments, while block two would encompass 10 one- and two-bedroom apartments.

The permission also includes plans for car parking spaces.

All of the buildings on site, including the former Lookers garage, workshop and offices, would be demolished.

Thomas Higgins, from the development team at Savills Chelmsford, said they were now inviting offers for the site. He said: “City centre sites such as this – with planning permission already in place – come to market very rarely. It’s an exciting opportunity for a developer to take the plans forward and bring a redundant site back into use.

“Military Road is in the heart of Colchester – close to its amenities, shops, restaurants and Colchester City station. New residential developments have historically sold very well and we expect strong interest from a range of bidders and developers of all sizes.”

Offers are invited on an unconditional basis and should be submitted by noon on Thursday, 23 February.
