Wandsworth Planning Committee has approved plans to redevelop the Bright Horizons Battersea Day Nursery and Pre-School at 18 Latchmere Road, SW11 2DX.
The proposal involves demolishing the existing single-storey nursery building and replacing it with a phased mixed-use development comprising a new nursery and nine flats.
The new nursery element would be a part one-, two- and three-storey building with a lower ground floor, providing modern childcare space together with refuse and recycling storage, cycle, scooter and buggy storage. A separate three-storey residential building, also with a lower ground floor, would deliver nine homes: four one-bedroom flats, four two-bedroom flats, and one three-bedroom flat. Associated amenity space, cycle parking and waste storage are included.
The application site sits on the west side of Latchmere Road at the corner with Abercrombie Street, in an area that is mainly residential and generally three storeys in height, though Harling Court opposite is four storeys. Battersea Park Road Local Centre lies around 65 metres to the north. Nursery use ceased in August 2022, leaving the building vacant.
The residential block would reach around 9.8 metres in height, with a brick-clad two-storey base and a recessed metal-clad upper level. Ground-floor width and an undercroft arrangement would separate the housing from the nursery while also accommodating residential storage and access.
The committee’s decision approves the scheme subject to conditions.
