Wates has become the first tier-one contractor in the UK to adopt the Material Index circular economy platform across its business, enabling large-scale material reuse on projects and across the wider industry.

The move supports its ambition to reach zero waste on sites by 2045 and contributes to its 2030 Pathways goals by reducing landfill waste and embodied carbon. Now available to all colleagues, Material Index helps teams identify, track and reuse materials from demolition, refurbishment and construction projects.

It improves the use of resources on site and provides practical support for circular construction and more sustainable delivery. The platform also offers real-time analytics, giving teams visibility of diversion from landfill alongside weight, volume and carbon data.

This supports project reporting, BREEAM requirements and evidence-based decision making. Wates says the launch builds on earlier peer-to-peer reuse trials and turns them into a business-wide, data-driven approach.

Environmental Sustainability Director Bekir Andrews said the platform helps teams find new uses for materials within Wates or elsewhere in the industry, while supporting Net Zero 2045 and customers’ growing sustainability expectations.
