West Sussex reorganisation delayed until October

The Government has delayed its decision on local government reorganisation in West Sussex, with a final announcement now expected in October 2026 rather than this month.

The delay follows two consultations on proposals to replace the current two-tier system of district and county councils with new unitary authorities that would deliver all local services in a single area.

Although councils had been preparing for a decision, no preferred option has yet been chosen. Westminster’s timetable still appears to be unchanged overall, with elections for the new shadow authority or authorities expected in May 2027 and the new council structure due to take effect in April 2028. Until then, the eight existing councils in West Sussex will continue running services as normal.

Local leaders said they were disappointed by the lack of certainty but stressed that work continues across the county to prepare for the change. The councils are working collaboratively to assess the implications of the delay and to plan next steps, while keeping residents, businesses, staff and partners informed as more details become available.

Cllr Adrian Moss, leader of Chichester District Council, said: “We are incredibly disappointed that the Government has still not yet made a decision on the future of local government in West Sussex. We had hoped for greater clarity by now.”

Cllr Jeremy Gardner, leader of Adur District Council, said: “Although we understand that this additional delay may be disappointing to residents, businesses, staff and councillors in Adur, we are keen to ensure that we get the right decision for our communities.”

Cllr Caroline Baxter, leader of Worthing Borough Council, added that councils will continue working with the Government and neighbouring authorities to secure “the best possible outcome” for local areas.
