Demolition has begun on several Council-owned empty homes in Westborough and Park Barn, including properties on Southway and Roundhill Way, as the first visible step in the Westborough and Park Barn Better Homes Programme.
The homes are no longer structurally safe, and their removal is intended to resolve immediate safety concerns while creating space for future neighbourhood improvements.
The Council says the programme is still at an early stage, and no decisions have been made about what will happen on the demolition sites or across the wider community. Any plans for new or improved housing, community facilities, or public spaces will be shaped with local residents.
Julian Higson, joint strategic director of housing, communities and environment said:
“A new resident engagement group is being set up so local people can help shape the programme from the start. The group will meet for the first time in the coming weeks. Residents will be able to share their insight, highlight priorities, and take part in open conversations as plans evolve.”
The wider programme aims to work with the community to explore long-term improvements, which may include upgrading existing homes, redevelopment opportunities, and enhancements to shared and public spaces. The Council says it wants homes that are warm, secure, energy efficient, well maintained, and suitable for all stages of life.
Over the coming months, residents will be invited to share views in person, online, by phone, or in writing. A new engagement group is also being invited to help guide the process and could later become a formal Resident Steering Group.
