Mid Sussex District Council approved detailed plans for a new primary school in Burgess Hill’s Northern Arc, now known as Brookleigh Primary School.
The school will be built on parcel P1.2 between Bedelands Nature Reserve and Goddard’s Green Waste Water Treatment Works, as part of Homes England’s wider 3,500-home development east of Isaacs Lane. This was Homes England’s first directly developed primary school and received reserved matters approval covering access, appearance, landscaping, layout and scale.
The project will provide 420 primary places for children aged 4 to 11, alongside a 52-place nursery and a 16-place Special Support Centre for pupils with additional needs. Plans also include car parking, a multi-use games area, playing fields and associated infrastructure, with a design aimed at net-zero carbon performance and strong outdoor recreation provision.
The approval marked an important step in delivering the education infrastructure needed to support the growing Brookleigh community. It also sits alongside wider county plans for Bedelands Academy, intended to create an all-through campus, although the secondary phase has faced funding and delivery challenges.
Overall, the council’s decision confirmed a major new school investment for Burgess Hill and helped move the Brookleigh development closer to becoming a fully serviced neighbourhood.
