Richmond Council says residents are closer to gaining new mental health services and a specialist school as the £30 million redevelopment of Barnes Hospital advances.
Construction began a year ago and has already reached a major milestone, with demolition of the former unused buildings completed and work now moving ahead on the new facilities.
The project will create a modern NHS outpatient mental health centre and a 90-place specialist school for children with social, emotional and mental health needs. Council leaders described the scheme as a significant investment in local children and young people and said it will help more families access support and specialist education closer to home.
The redevelopment is being delivered by Southwest London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust and the Department for Education. Trust leaders said the new hospital building will provide therapeutic, welcoming environments and help restore services at Barnes, while also supporting efforts to reduce stigma around mental health.
A celebration event at the site brought together councillors, NHS leaders, patients, carers, community representatives and project partners. The Mayor of Richmond upon Thames and Richmond Park MP Sarah Olney also attended.
The new school will be operated by the Beckmead Trust. Both the mental health facility and the school are expected to open in autumn 2027, forming part of a wider investment in Richmond’s health infrastructure.
