Two large data centre projects in Southall have been approved by Ealing Council, promising major investment, thousands of jobs, and local community benefits.

The schemes are led by Global Technical Realty (GTR) at the International Trading Estate and CyrusOne at the former Honey Monster factory site. Both are being developed on previously used industrial land that is vacant or in need of renewal.

The council says the projects were approved only after a detailed assessment of planning issues, including electricity supply, design, sustainability, transport, environmental impact, and community benefit. Councillor Monica Hamidi said data centres are welcome where the right safeguards are in place and where they support inclusive economic growth.

GTR’s £1 billion project is expected to deliver more than 1,000 permanent jobs, around 775 of them skilled, plus 460 construction jobs a year during building. It would also provide about £20 million in Section 106 contributions, including £6 million for skills training, flood prevention, and tree planting. CyrusOne’s £1.4 billion scheme is forecast to create over 1,100 construction jobs and around 650 permanent roles, while contributing £17.8 million for employment, skills, transport, air quality, and carbon reduction measures.

Both developments will include affordable workspace for small businesses and freelancers. The council has also produced a data centre skills strategy to help residents access sector jobs.

Concerns over power use and environmental impact were considered during planning. The developers must secure electricity independently, and both sites include space for energy centres that could support future district heat networks.

Final approval still depends on planning conditions, signed agreements, and referral to the Mayor of London.
