The Crystal Palace National Sports Centre, a historic and iconic sporting venue in London, is set to undergo a transformative redevelopment.

Unveiled by the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, the project promises to revitalise the centre, which has been a cornerstone of UK athletics and community sports since its opening in 1964. The redevelopment will focus on refurbishing the 50-meter swimming and diving pools, enhancing indoor facilities, and upgrading external pitches and the athletics stadium.

Initially opened in 1964, the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre has hosted various events, from the first Women’s FA Cup final to Grand Prix motor-racing. However, the venue now requires significant investment to restore its former glory. The redevelopment plans, announced in summer 2023, aim to upgrade the sporting facilities for the local community, with completion targeted for 2028.

The Mayor has confirmed Morgan Sindall Construction’s appointment to lead the design and construction of the centre. The company will begin a pre-construction period immediately, focusing on detailed planning and obtaining listed building consent. Major construction work is expected to commence in the latter half of next year. The redevelopment will include a complete rebuild of the swimming pools’ structure and improved sporting facilities.

In addition to the structural improvements, the project will focus on sustainability. Last year, Sadiq Khan delivered a £23 million investment from his Green Finance Fund to support the centre’s transition to all-electric operations, reducing carbon emissions and eliminating reliance on fossil fuels for the first time. The redevelopment is particularly complex due to the building’s protected Grade II* listed status, requiring adherence to heritage guidelines.

Mayor Sadiq Khan expressed his commitment to the project: “Crystal Palace National Sports Centre is a historic and much-loved sporting and community facility where many UK sporting stars have started their careers and trained, but which needs major investment and refurbishment. I am committed to this once-in-a-generation redevelopment of the site, which will secure its future for decades to come.”

Richard Dobson, Morgan Sindall Construction’s area director for London, shared his enthusiasm for the project, saying, “We’re delighted to have been appointed to this project, as the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre is an iconic facility that’s not only close to the hearts of people in the area but is also an important historic national sporting landmark. The project promises to breathe new life into the extensive sporting facilities, while delivering a wide range of health, wellbeing, and social value benefits for local communities.”

The redevelopment will also address accessibility issues, with plans to install lifts and improve the interior layout to make the facility more inclusive. A new ventilation strategy will enhance temperature and humidity control, creating a more comfortable environment for users.

The Crystal Palace National Sports Centre holds a special place in the hearts of many, including residents and athletes. Redevelopment is crucial to preserving its legacy while adapting to modern needs. As the project progresses, it promises to deliver a state-of-the-art facility honouring its rich history and serving the community for generations.
