Basingstoke Town Community Football Club look set to get a home of their own as part of plans being considered by the council’s decision-making Cabinet next week.
Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council has been working closely with the club and Hampshire Football Association to agree a solution that means the club has its own ground and facilities while supporting grassroots football in the borough.
At a meeting on Tuesday 9 June, Cabinet will be asked to consider a proposal that would see Hampshire Football Association surrender its lease for Winklebury Football Complex, so that a new long-term lease can be granted by the council to Basingstoke Town Community Football Club.
The move would give the football club a permanent home of its own, offering the long‑term security needed to grow, attract new investment and deliver on the ambitions set out in its business plan for the future. This includes increasing matchday attendance and community events and expanding education and training opportunities, academy pathways and women’s and youth teams.
As part of this agreement, the club would then grant a sub-lease to Hampshire FA, allowing the association to continue managing the pitch and overseeing grassroots and community football, with the facility remaining available to local players and clubs in line with existing grant conditions.
Comments
Cllr Gavin James, co-leader, said: “Securing the future and a long-term home for the football club has been one of our top priorities and something we’ve been determined to get right.
“After a lot of hard work between us, this agreement gives the club a home of its own at Winklebury where it can grow for the future, attract investment and expand its fantastic plans both on and off the pitch.
“At the same time, it ensures Hampshire FA can carry on supporting grassroots and community football in the borough which is incredibly important. We believe this is a positive step forward that protects the future of football at Winklebury and benefits the wider community.”
Jack Miller, chairman of Basingstoke Town Community Football Club, said: “This proposal is a massive step forward for the future of football in Basingstoke, and it follows a long period of close collaboration with Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council and Hampshire FA. Having a home of our own is absolutely vital for future-proofing the club and ensuring we remain firmly in control of our own destiny.
“We are incredibly excited about this opportunity, especially during our 130th anniversary year. Securing this foundation would allow us to truly build for the future and deliver our ambitions both on and off the pitch.”
Neil Cassar, chief executive, Hampshire Football Association, said: “We have been working closely with Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council and Basingstoke Town Community FC to further develop opportunities for the game to progress in the town at senior and local level for years to come. We look forward to progressing further to enable the opportunities that exist become reality.”
Future
Following the Cabinet meeting on Tuesday 9 June, councillors will be asked to approve the extra budget needed for the proposal at a meeting of Council on Thursday 16 July. It will also be subject to final agreements being signed by Basingstoke Town Community Football Club and Hampshire Football Association.
