The Wandsworth Planning Committee has approved a significant redevelopment project at the Salvation Army Citadel, located at 9 Ram Street, SW18 1TJ.

This decision, made unanimously, paves the way for the demolition of the existing structure and the construction of a new six-storey building. The project, proposed by GRID Architects on behalf of ARC LRE Ltd, aims to transform the site into a mixed-use development featuring flexible community and commercial spaces on part of the ground floor, alongside a 50-bedroom hotel occupying the remainder of the ground floor and upper levels.

The site, spanning 288 sqm, is strategically positioned near Wandsworth Town Centre, offering excellent transport links with a Public Transport Accessibility Level (PTAL) of 5. The development is set to enhance the local area, which is characterised by a blend of retail, commercial, and residential uses. The proximity to key landmarks, such as Wandsworth Town Hall and the Ram Street Brewery Complex, adds to the site’s appeal.

Despite being located in Flood Zone 3a, indicating a high probability of flooding, the site benefits from the protection of the River Thames flood defences. The project aligns with the Site Allocation WT19, promoting a mix of uses that retain local civic functions while providing commercial and public spaces. This redevelopment is expected to contribute to the evolving townscape, reflecting recent trends in mixed-use developments within Wandsworth Town Centre.

The approval marks a significant step forward in revitalising the area, promising to bring new life and economic activity to this prominent location.
