Hammersmith and Fulham Council has approved a significant change of use from retail to a theatrical venue for part of the Westfield Shopping Centre in the White City East sub-area.
This decision marks a pivotal development in the White City Regeneration Area (WCRA), designated as an Opportunity Area in the London Plan. The approval allows for transforming a vacant unit previously occupied by Debenhams into a dual Class E and Sui Generis venue. This change will facilitate an innovative immersive dining experience that combines culinary delights with theatrical performances.
The site, measuring 3,395 square metres, is strategically positioned within the Shepherd’s Bush Town Centre, aligning with the Borough’s Local Plan. The refurbishment of the former Debenhams store, which spanned four levels, has created multiple smaller retail units, paving the way for this new venture. The proposed venue will accommodate up to 600 spectators, offering a unique blend of entertainment and dining.
The venue’s layout has been meticulously planned, with the auditorium centrally located to optimise space and functionality. The foyer extends along the substantial shop frontage, while essential support spaces such as WCs, kitchens, dressing rooms, and offices are arranged around the auditorium’s periphery. The design considers the existing drainage and ventilation points, ensuring a seamless integration of the new facilities.
This development revitalises a key area within the Westfield Shopping Centre. It contributes to the broader vision of the WCRA, promoting housing, commercial, creative, and academic uses in a mixed-use environment. Hammersmith and Fulham Council’s approval underscores the area’s potential for growth and innovation.
