The leader of Hounslow Council, Cllr Shantanu Rajawat has welcomed Mayor of London Sadiq Khan’s West London Orbital Line (WLO) statement.

In his statement, Cllr Rajawat said:

“I was pleased to see the Mayor of London’s response to the London Assembly last week confirming significant progress on the West London Orbital rail line. This is an exciting development that will directly benefit Hounslow and the wider west London region, creating a vital new transport link to the HS2 interchange station at Old Oak Common.

“As part of the proposed scheme, the new line will run through Hounslow, with stations at key locations including Isleworth, Syon Lane, and Brentford, and potentially a new station near the Brentford football stadium. The route will connect to the existing Overground network at South Acton, providing an invaluable link to the heart of London and the transformative HS2 network.

“This is the result of years of hard work and lobbying by Hounslow Council in partnership with our neighbouring boroughs through the West London Alliance, which has strongly advocated for improved transport infrastructure as one of the top priorities for the sub-region’s growth. Our work has focused on making the case for better connectivity, not only for the benefit of Hounslow’s residents but also to unlock new opportunities for businesses, tourism, and the economy as a whole.

“The West London Orbital is more than just a rail project; it represents a strategic investment in the future of the area, facilitating growth in housing, jobs, and commercial opportunities. It will play a critical role in supporting the Government’s housing and regeneration objectives while helping to alleviate congestion on our roads and provide sustainable, green alternatives to car travel.

“The Mayor’s confirmation that feasible solutions have been identified for all elements of the project is a significant milestone. However, as The Mayor has rightly pointed out, the project will require substantial investment to move forward. Hounslow Council is committed to working alongside the Mayor, Transport for London (TfL), and the Government to ensure that this project receives the necessary funding to progress to the next stage.

“We know that west London has long been underserved by the capital’s transport network – particularly in terms of our residents’ ability to travel around West London as well as into central London – and this project represents a much-needed step forward. The West London Orbital will connect communities, drive economic growth, and play a key role in reducing carbon emissions, aligning with our commitment to sustainability and better public transport options for our residents.

“As the project moves into its next phase, we look forward to continuing our collaborative work with the Mayor, TfL, and our local partners to ensure the West London Orbital becomes a reality. This is a major step forward for Hounslow, for west London, and for the future of London’s transport infrastructure. We are excited to see it take shape and to benefit from the improved connectivity it will bring.”
