In April, Hounslow will consult on the Character and Design Code Study SPD (Supplementary Planning Document).

Design coding is one tool available to local planning authorities, communities and developers to define and deliver design quality. It is a set of design requirements that provide detailed parameters for the physical development of an area.

The New London Plan emphasises the use of design codes: Policy D4 states that design codes should help bring forward development and ensure it delivers high-quality design and placemaking.

The study aims to raise the bar of design quality across the entire borough – ensuring that local people can live, work and thrive in sustainable, healthy, social, and well-designed places.

The consultation takes place between Monday 4 April and Friday 13 May 2022.

The following workshops have been set up for feedback on the document:

  • Thursday 21 April: West of Borough Workshop (encompassing Feltham, Hanworth, Bedfont, Hounslow West, Cranford & Heston & Central Hounslow).
  •  Thursday 28 April: East of Borough Workshop (encompassing Chiswick, Brentford & Isleworth and Osterley).

The council will refine the study in line with feedback from residents. The study will then be published for further consultation before formally adopted later this year.
