An application for the demolition of existing buildings, and construction of an Aldi store in Keynsham has seen a motion to permit, subject to new conditions approved at yesterdays Bath and North East Somerset Council’s planning committee meeting.
The application came into the meeting with a recommendation for refusal, based on the grounds that the store would create disruption on local highways, however counter-arguments were raised, Cllr Ian Halsall mentioned: “I remember when Ikea was built on the M32, it was Bedlam for the first two months, but people changed their habits”.
Cllr Halsall then went on to discuss one of the main concerns, that being traffic from the local recycling centre, he considered it to be ‘winding down’ during the mid to late afternoon – the key time period the traffic congestion modelling was based upon.
The application has received 200 lodgings of support from local residents, as well as 20 objections.
Decision
A motion to refuse resulted in a tie of four on each side.
Later, a. vote to delegate to permit, subject to new conditions was held, with six voting in favour, two against, and one abstaining, the motion was therefore carried.
