Plans for a new GP surgery in Ipswich expected to cost £7.75m over three years have moved forward.

The NHS has approved the outline business case for a GP surgery on the former Tooks Road bakery site, with a decision on the application expected next month.

Ipswich Borough Council’s cabinet has also decided to tender for a lead consultant to manage construction.

Plans are for a 1,150 sq m two-storey surgery with 29 clinic rooms, 11 nurse rooms and a minor operating suite.

The council submitted its planning application last November.

Cllr Martin Cook, portfolio holder for resources, said at the cabinet meeting: “When it is complete, this will be one of the largest surgeries in the Ipswich area.

“I am pleased to say that the outline business case has been approved by the NHS and we have submitted the planning application for the scheme. We are expecting to receive tender returns for the lead consultant in the design team by the end of next month.”

Work is expected to start on-site in 2024 and be finished in 2025.
