An Indian restaurant is to replace the Baron Cadogan pub in Prospect Street, Caversham.

Clay’s Hyderabadi Kitchen, currently in London Street, Reading, has signed a lease on the unit which has been run as an independent pub since closing as a Wetherspoon in March 2019.

Locals were disappointed to find the Baron Cadogan put up ‘closed’ signs in mid-March when its two-year lease came to an end and rumours of its new occupier have been rife.

Clay’s, which opened its London Street restaurant in June 2018, has won praise in in the national media including from Jay Rayner, Tom Parker-Bowles and William Sitwell.

Its owners, named on its website as Nandana and Sharat, have been reporting cryptic news about its new beginnings on its social media.

But Thames Tap can reveal Clay’s is the new occupier of the site at 22-24 Prospect Street.

No-one from the restaurant was available to speak to Thames Tap but we were assured the business is extremely busy with its new plans.

The 100-cover former pub was a lighting and furniture shop until JD Wetherspoon took a lease in 1997. Prior to that, the site had been a Co-op.
