North Somerset Council’s Banwell bypass project has now seen on-site construction work for a year, in that time 59 full-time roles have been created.
Within this, nine were previously long-term unemployed individuals, six were young people previously not in work or education, eleven are armed force veterans, and three are apprentices studying quantity surveying.
Project details
The project is mostly funded by the Homes England Housing Infrastructure Fund (HIF), and the bypass is set to run north of the Banwell village, aiming to remove congestion from a pinch point between the A38 and Weston-Super-Mare.
The site has aims to complete the Banwell Bridge by summer 2026, with full project completion by summer 2027.
Comments
Cllr Mike Bell, leader of North Somerset Council, said: “Not only does a project like the Banwell bypass build important links that improve transport to better connect communities and support economic growth, but they also create opportunities for residents to access new jobs in the local area that they call home.
“From the replacement of Winterstoke Road Bridge to the restoration of Birnbeck Pier and the reopening of the Portishead to Bristol rail line, these projects offer residents the chance to develop new skills and start a career in the construction industry as we invest in North Somerset.
“The employment opportunities don’t stop at the site boundary either. When projects such as new schools or health centres reach completion, their larger and more modern facilities create roles and opportunities for the future of our community and economy.”
Vince Marsh, who currently works on the bypass, said “Large construction schemes should prioritise employing local people, which enables workers like me to give back to their local community.
“Being local does mean that I understand how the wider project will benefit everybody in the community, and it means I get to enjoy the fruits of our labour once the project is finished.
“I often drive through Banwell going to the Nelson’s Arms for a carvery, Mendip Activity Centre, and, recently, whilst teaching my partner to drive.
“I’ve been stuck in traffic at village’s pinch point many times and know the bypass will help getting around.”
