Speculation has increased around the Clearlake consortium’s plans to develop Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge stadium.
The freehold for the land is owned by a consortium of fans, the Chelsea Pitch Owners (CPO), who have given Chelsea FC a 180-year lease. Speculation included moving to Earls Court, which is currently undergoing significant change.
The sale of Stoll Mansions adjacent to Stamford Bridge with vacant possession presents the current owners, led by Ted Boehly, with an opportunity to expand. The buildings are Grade II listed, presenting many challenges for the purchaser. It is rumoured £50m has been offered.
On a different thread, the CPO has confirmed that the club wish to stay at Stamford Bridge and increase capacity.
Finally, the original plans to upgrade the stadium from 42,000 to 60,000 capacity have been removed from the Hammersmith and Fulham website due to expiration. With the funds available and a strong desire to improve the club, a firm announcement is expected to be made in 2023.
