Transport for London has opened applications for Walking and Cycling Grants London, a programme funded by TfL and The London Marathon Foundation and administered by Groundwork London.
The grants support community and not-for-profit organisations that help more Londoners walk, cycle and choose active travel. Successful applicants can receive up to £10,000 for projects delivered over three years, while Community Ideas Grants offer up to £5,000 for groups that want to replicate proven ideas already used elsewhere in London. Applications are open until 28 September at wcgl.london.
Since 2015, the programme has supported more than 100,000 Londoners and funded over 500 projects across 32 boroughs and the City of London. It focuses on tackling barriers faced by under-represented groups and building confidence through community-led activities. Projects have included cycling lessons, bike repair sessions, rides for children with disabilities, and walking initiatives that reduce isolation, improve mental health and support people living with long-term health conditions. Last year alone, 185 projects received funding.
TfL says active travel is vital for a healthier, more sustainable transport network, and the grants are part of wider efforts that include the TfL Go app, Cycle Sundays and the expanding Cycleway network, now 450km long. Leaders from TfL, the Mayor’s office, the London Marathon Foundation and Groundwork London all stressed the importance of inclusive, locally led projects.
Existing grantees highlighted real impact, including community walks along canals in Southall and social walking groups that helped older adults connect, stay active and build friendships.
