Sports Direct has declined to comment on reports it is to move its Reading store across Broad Street to occupy the former Clas Ohlson unit.

Thames Tap understands workers are currently fitting out the unit, which is owned by Sports Direct parent company Frasers Group. Stakeholders in the town we have asked have described the move as ‘the town’s worst kept secret’.

However, our attempts to get a reply from the group have, so far, failed.

There are also moves on the south side of Broad Street where the former EE unit is being split into two. Eyesite has signed up for one part of the unit and is expected to move from 142 Friar Street.

Rumours that Barclays Bank will move its branch have been denied by the bank. A spokesperson said: “Our branch network is constantly reviewed, but there are no current plans to close Barclays 90-93 Broad Street, Reading.”
