The first video and images have been released to show the progress of Wisley Acres, the major new community being built on the site of the former Wisley Airfield in Ockham, Surrey.

Taylor Wimpey is leading construction of the development, which will eventually comprise 1,730 homes supported by a wide range of community facilities, as part of proposals to meet the need for new homes and infrastructure locally.

The first phase of homes, to be known as Stratford View, is due to launch this summer and work on the new neighbourhood is now well underway.

Alongside the homes, of which 40 per  cent (692) will be designated for affordable rent or purchase, Taylor Wimpey is creating a wide range of green spaces and infrastructure that will combine to create a sustainable community with all the essential amenities needed for daily life.

Work has also begun on the 45 hectare Three Leys Park, which will be opened to all prior to any homes being occupied. The ground has been prepared and the landscape contractor will start planting trees and meadows this month ahead of the anticipated opening in late autumn this year.

The park will be part of a wider network of green spaces weaving through the development, which together will deliver a 20 per cent biodiversity net gain – double the national policy requirement. Work on the Three Leys Visitor Centre, which will include a new café and community space, is due to start in July.

Leon McGinty, acting sales and marketing director for Taylor Wimpey South Thames, said: “We’ve been working on the proposals for Wisley Acres for a number of years, and it is really exciting to see the vision that we have talked about for so long finally becoming a reality. These photos and videos were taken in March, and already things have moved on so much, with homes rising from the ground.

“This community will be about so much more than new homes. Three Leys Park and the other green spaces, shops, cafes, sports pitches and other facilities will all help this to become a destination development where people truly can live, work, learn and play in a sustainable way. It’s not long now until we will be able to welcome people on site to see for themselves, and we’re looking forward to showing off all our hard work.”

Notable milestones for the Wisley Acres development this year include:*

  • New school planning application submission – spring
  • Wisley Lane roundabout completion – spring / summer
  • First homes go on sale – summer
  • Energy centre completion – summer
  • Three Leys Park opens – late autumn
